PayPal Native Checkout

Native Checkout

Problem

A large segment of PayPal users have the friction point of providing a password when shopping online. We try to persist login’s using cookies, but we do not have a good way of making those cookies stick. iOS Safari brutally deletes cookies after a few days of non use. Making matters worse SCA compliance now requires users to have a second factor of authentication, which means a more secure, but a higher friction checkout experience for web based users. Conversely the PayPal app has a high install rate, most sessions are password-less and we could step up to biometric when we need an extra measure of security.

V1 - Generally increasing password-less and feed into SCA story.

V2 - Driving engagement and cross product use (apple pay and google pay and new competitors are providing new experiences that are faster and stickier than PayPal. Therefore we need to make sure that PayPal is the best experience and level the playing field against competitors that are built into the device.

V3 - PayPal does not currently provide a best in class experience to merchant apps. Native purchases have to route traffic to a webview where the experience is worse and less secure!!
